In recent years, smartphone manufacturers have repeatedly talked about the imminent appearance of devices with cameras hidden under the display. Apparently, this technology is finally ready to appear in commercial products.
ZTE recently announced that it will officially unveil the Axon 20 5G smartphone with a sub-screen camera on September 1. Other companies like OPPO and Xiaomi are also working on such solutions. In addition, TCL is developing a similar product. This is evidenced by a patent application filed a few months ago. Moreover, the company decided not to limit itself only to the front camera hidden under the display. The patent describes a smartphone with all camera sensors hidden from the user's eyes.
The image shows a device with fairly large bezels around the display. Obviously, the front camera module is located under the display, as it is nowhere to be seen. More interestingly, no cameras are visible on the rear panel either. In this case, the upper part of the back panel looks noticeably larger than the rest of the area. This is probably where the elements of the camera module are located. However, details on this matter were not specified.
It can be assumed that the invisible camera module is hidden behind a glass panel, which becomes transparent when you need to take a photo or record a video. When the camera is not in use, the glass panel remains opaque. Similar technology was used in the OnePlus Concept One smartphone.
It should be noted that so far we are only talking about a patent. It is not certain that TCL will bring a consumer product to the market with these features in the foreseeable future.
